Defamation Laws In El Salvador

El Salvador is one of the few countries in Latin America that has eliminated defamation as a criminal offense at the federal level in 2007.

On October 1, 2011, Salvadoran President Mauricio Funes, supported the reform to decriminalize slander, libel and defamation in the whole Central American country. The legislative assembly approved a decree on September 8, 2011 to substitute incarceration with fines for crimes against public image and privacy.
